Based on Etiology ( causes)
Physiologic Jaundice
Jaundice attributable to immaturity of the newborn
organ and systems
Non Physiologic Jaundice
Jaundice due to pathologic causes.
Based on Onset
Early
Late
Prolonged
Physiologic jaundice has good prognosis ( outcome) and is as a result of immaturity of liver enzymes that normally clear those chemicals( bilirubin) that cause jaundice. It disappears after 7 days though can be prolonged in premature babies. It is said that all premature babies will develop jaundice after birth.Pathologic jaundice has poor prognosis and it is usually not related to immaturity of liver enzymes but underline diseases going in the body.
